Type: Commercial

Location: Cleveland,USA

Area: 3000 Sq.m.

The proposed area is situated at a very particular site of Cleveland city. It is between many important public buildings, such as the Cleveland stadium, the city hall, the mall, the science museum, the Cuyahoga county Courthouse, the rock and roll hall of fame museum and many others. The creation of a big station is a project with a lot of potential as well as opportunities of creating an “event” space in Cleveland’s city center. The unit (building) has to be part of the whole (city). The relation between private and public space is an important issue for the design process of this project. The proposition for the new Cleveland station center is aiming to give a solution to the problematic areas in the existing situation, such as vehicle and pedestrian circulation, connections between the two sites, regeneration of the area and creation of a new skyline from the city center to the lake site.

The functionality of the building is easy to understand and use. Through a horizontal linear construction with many double high spaces, a new roundabout that permits access to the station from both the highway lanes and a green area on the roof that creates pedestrian and cycling connection all along the site, the new Cleveland Lakefront Station is not just a station but a new urban park. A multi usage building that creates a new landscape experience in the center of the city, creating an accessible, pleasant, multidirectional point and a new Landmark for Cleveland City.

The people of Cleveland will gain a station center, a multi space that redefines the area’s character and becomes an extension of the city’s main square as well as part of the topography.

Crossing the new park, one can walk through a green path with sloped green hills that can become amphitheatric seats with all possible views of the city. The green trapeziums each of which has a different slope, give different views creating urban frames and making the path even more part of the city. The pedestrian route is connected with both bridges, east and west of the plot, as well as with the stadium site, using the existing access and a new bridge connection from the square which also hosts the access to the train station platform zone. The station has vehicle, cycling and pedestrian accesses from all directions proposing a homogeneous public and private space for the citizens to use, to live and to experience.
